This year I decided I needed to clean out my overrun of blogs that I follow in Google Reader. I had set my sights waaay to high. We are talking several hundred. I don't have time to read that many blogs daily! I can't possibly give the proper attention and be able to comment, etc.

So I go into Google Reader, go into Manage Subscriptions and wean (delete) out the ones I no longer want to follow. Takes quite a while. A couple of days actually. But then the list is at a manageable amount that I can handle reading each day. It doesn't take me an hour to read. I am blogging and commenting with ease!

Then, two days later, POOF! They are all back. What?!? This keeps happening over and over again. Every time I try and clean out my list.

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Is there a better way of doing it? I really feel like pulling my hair out!

This weekend I upgraded my phone from an iPhone 3GS to a 4GS. I basically upgraded for the better camera and the new Siri app. I have been so happy with that decision. The new camera is 8 megapixels and has a flash (which the 3GS was lacking.) It also works as a flashlight that is so bright. I was even able to find some low cost covers for it at Five Below because I get bored quickly and have to changer "her" clothes often like a Barbie, hee hee.

Siri is just great. You just have to be sure and speak clearly, but it saves a lot of typing when looking for information. The kids are getting a kick out of asking her crazy questions. My son tries to trick her into answering questions about the game Halo, but she is all business all the time, LOL. I tell her "text my husband that I am getting gas" and in two seconds flat she is done, without me having to try and find the letters while driving. I asked her to marry me, but she spewed legal speak and got herself out of it. Like a woman.

In July, my husband bought me an iPad 2 for my birthday. I just love it! I can surf my blogs, play games or write posts right on the couch. Totally adds to my laziness! He now complains that I pay more attention to it than him, but hey it totally gets me through his alligator hunting and alien pyramid shows. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do, right?

Sunday Dinner

This week the kids are with their biological dad so I decided to make a nice dinner for the two of us. On the menu is: Roast Beef and gravy, Crack Potatoes and Green Beans.

My husband picked up a gorgeous Angus eye round. I seasoned it with salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.

I found the recipe for the Crack Potatoes on www.plainchicken.com. You can find them here. They are called crack potatoes because you can never get enough they are so good!

Crack Potatoes
2 (16 oz) containers sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 (3 oz) bags real bacon bits
2 packages Ranch dip mix
1 large package frozen hash brown potatoes

Combine first four ingredients.
Mix in hash browns. Spread into a 9 x 13 pan. (I used 3 disposable loaf pans, cooked one and froze the rest for later) Bake at 400 degrees for 45-60 minutes.

I put the roast in a roasting pan beside the potatoes and let them both cook for an hour.

When they were done I poured the drippings from the pan into a pot with a jar of beef gravy for flavor.

We served the dinner with some green beans and ate until we busted. It was so good.

My daughter, Lil Tink is growing up fast. I think I have been handling it pretty well so far.

All while keeping the lines of trust and communication open and letting her find her own personality. Tonight she comes and tells me she plans on getting her nose or belly button pierced on Sunday. WHAT??? Did I mention that she is only twelve! She we will be 13 in March, but come on...this girl wants to grow up wayyyy to fast. I understand the attraction of wanting to look older, but I think I need to put my foot down with this one! If I keep letting her get her way she will start looking like this!! Before she is 18!

So over Christmas break I caught an episode of "Pioneer Woman" on the Food Network. I have heard all about the "Pioneer" woman." Her blog, her cookbook, her fame. Let me tell you, she was no Rachael Ray or Paula Deen. No sparkling personality or quick wit - just a nervous woman talking about her day living in the country. Now, hear me out...Paula Deen is from the country and she makes it seem fun to cook in a southern way. But the Pioneer Woman just shows how she just lived her day every day.

No offense, Ms. Drummond, but I just couldn't get into it because I do not live the way you do. My day does not consist of cattle or fiesta ware or that huge camera that she uses to take pictures of her kids on horses. I am just a simple woman from the suburbs, working at a job, trying to keep my house clean, shuttling my kids around to their various activities taking pictures with my iPhone and trying to keep my husband happy. My husband and I both enjoy cooking and could also share quick meals that every suburb mom could make. So I thought, hey! I could totally do what she does! Run a blog for people who have to go to work every day, and drive to softball and boy scouts, and use the dishes they bought on sale in Walmart. People who want quick but hearty side dishes to serve at Thanksgiving or Sunday dinner. Quick everyday meals for women on the run.

Now over the break I also discovered the blog of Jeff Goins. He is a truly amazing writer from Tennessee who helps people with their writing and blogs. I read one entry in particular which changed my way of thinking about my dream for my blog. It told you to stop dreaming at start doing. Start doing whatever it is that your dream requires to become action.
I do not make resolutions, they are pointless and no one follows through with them. Instead, this New Year I decided to take Jeff's advice and return my focus to my blog. I have been very lax lately due to my busy life ~~laziness~~. But my dream is, when my kids grow up and leave, for me to have a career in blogging. Because I love it. Sure, it is not going to make me ~~much~~ any money, but I enjoy it. And that is what my life should be about, things that I enjoy!

Now the decision that I need to make, and that I would like your help with is:

Should I just reformulate this blog (again) to fit this new idea and keep the followers that I already have with a title that really doesn't fit?

Should I start a new blog with a new format and lose the followers I already have (around 200) . One that would seem better fit for a mom of the suburbs?

I would love to hear your opinions on this...so please leave some comments.

Pill Trouble

So hubby is unemployed again. Damn economy. And Cobra just ran out so that means our prescription coverage ran out. And anyone who has read my blog knows about my being Bipolar. And anyone on Bipolar meds know how expensive they are. One months worth purchased here in the US would be $1,000!!! PER MONTH!!! Damn government!!

So I am going to order my meds from Canada. I will get more pills for hundreds less. Thank you Canada, (well actually India cuz' that's where they are being shipped from.) But of course because I am bipolar I waited until the last minute to order and their is no "express" shipping for meds from India! Damn ME! So now I have to make the pills I have last by taking them every other day, LOL.

Which makes me normal one day, and manic the next. Sooo much so that not even sleep meds can get me to sleep on those manic nights. I just lay there and think. And think and think. My husband is loving it cause I am not sleeping the day away and getting things done. But it is exhausting on the body, going back and forth.

I have 5 days down and hopefully only 11 more, LOL. Wish me luck!

1. How old do you act? Usually my age, cause my kids won't have it any other way. Damn kids.

2. Why is the sky blue? What do I look like, a science major?

3. Do you burp, fart, or both in front of others? In front of my immediate family yes, I figure if I am in my own house, I should be comfortable. But if we have company, i can be polite and hold it in.

I remember getting a Donnie and Marie Osmond album for Christmas from my parents. Must have been like 8 or 9.

2 - What's the first concert you've ever been to, the year and who performed?
First 'real' concert was the Beach Boys in the arena in Six Flags here in NJ. They were awesome. Christened me to many concerts in that tiny arena following a full day in the amusement park. Ahh memories...

3 - Ever bleed from your ass?
Sure have. Let's just leave it at that.

4 - If you went to your Senior Prom and had a date, do you still speak to said person?
No. And really would rather not. He turned out to be a total ass.

5 - Name the one television show that's no longer on the air that could have gone on forever. Oh, this is easy. I have a couple. Lost. or XFiles. In that order. It was recently the one year anniversary of the finale of Lost and I still feel the emptiness in my TV schedule with it being gone! LOL!

It is hard to go anywhere lately and not hear about the tornadoes that are hitting our middle states almost daily. We live in the Northeast, so we don't face much threat, but we do have family in Tennessee and we do worry.

I watched this video and it just broke my heart. I couldn't help but cry. The screams of the children and the people calling out to the Lord. Thankfully no one was hurt. I couldn't imagine having to live through an ordeal like that with my children. When will these storms stop? Why do they keep happening? Why must so many people die?

I have had surgery for infertility, a couple for malignant melanoma, a couple for skin grafts and a major arm reconstruction.

2. Ever ride in an ambulance?

I did ride in an ambulance (I also flew in an emergency plane ride to a trauma hospital), but I do not remember it due to the amnesia I have from the accident that caused the last two surgeries listed.

3. How are you in a medical emergency? Panicked? Calm?

I am calm in a medical emergency with everyone except my kids. When my father was in his last months I was very calm and organized with him. With my kids I am constantly rethinking my decisions, like every 5 minutes, and driving them insane.

4. Do you have a garden? Flowers or veggies?

I have no garden because I can only seem to keep my children alive, LOL.

5. When did you move out of your parents house?

I moved out of my parents house at the age of 22 when I was first married.

Neglect? Part 2

Who determines sanity? Who determines when a person is stable on medications prescribed? Can I be bipolar and be able to determine my own level of crazy?

My doctor changed my crazy medicine from Geodon to Seroquel SR. The Geodon was giving me crazy side effects, like constant giddiness and twitching like I was a crackhead. The Seroquel XR stepped in nicely at 300 mg per day. My doctor even stopped my Zoloft thinking it wasn't necessary, because the Seroquel should do its job.

Life went by happily. Until Dad died. Then all hell broke loose. I was angry, impatient and unapologetic. This led to a visit back to the doctor's office, which provided an increase of the Seroquel dosage. This helped me control the anger and grief better. But I was still ripping my husbands head off and more. Another trip to doctor and another increase in dosage.

I believe we are at a good level now. My anger is controlled. I am more forgiving of people and patient. But I am now standing up for myself and not letting people walk on me. This is causing some problems with the people who are doing the walking, but I am not a roaring lion. I am handling it patiently and calmly.

Unfortunately this medication makes it difficult for me to sit still and pour out my heart. I am going to have to schedule my time so that I can continue being a part of the internet world. Thanks for your support and patience. I still read my friends blogs daily, I hope to begin showing my support for you all again!

Neglect? Part 1

Today I am featured by Simply Stacie in her Blog Spotlight. I am so flattered to be shown in this way. I am also very sad because I haven't posted in so long.

One reason is due to my father's death last month. His death was not a surprise. In 2003, he was diagnosed with cancer of the Thyroid. It was treated with radiation. That was quickly followed with a tumor surrounding his throat. Doctors attempted removal by surgery, but aborted that because it could kill him. He was given a permanent tracheotomy tube, and several bouts of radiation and chemotherapy. This surgery and treatment nearly killed him. Doctors told mom that she should settle his estate and he had maybe three years to live. He was released into a rehab. Which he quickly walked out of. His spirit rallied and he recovered, learning how to deal with a permanent trach.

Dad suffered from chronic high PSA levels. Then two years ago he tested positive for Prostate Cancer. This was treated with radiation. He suddenly became constantly dizzy and falling, driving on curbs and not being able to have sane conversations. I insisted he see the doctor who prescribed a MRI of the Head, which showed a tumor on his brain. This followed with brain surgery and radiation. Again he improved to normal health. Until this summer when the brain symptoms retured. A new MRI showed a new tumor on the brain. By this time, he was only strong enough for radiation. He kept falling at home and getting hurt. Mom was forced to admit him to rehab so they could help him regain his strength.

Unfortunately, after admission Dad's condition failed quickly. I discussed Hospice with Mom but she didn't think it was that serious. Until it was, then she okayed that decision. He died the next morning.

I am glad that he is not longer in pain. He went through 7+ years of pain and suffering. He died in his sleep looking like an angel. But he was still my dad, and I am still his little girl. Add the fact that my head was a mess (see part 2) I was constantly lashing out and crying.

Our first Thanksgiving without him approaches, and things are not calm. Words were said and our family will not be celebrating together. I am sorry about that, but I am starting to stand up for myself and not rely on Dad to help make my decision.

He was my rock. I was able to tell him anything with no fear of punishment. And being an undiagnosed bipolar, I could provide lots of times I needed to talk to him. He did not judge me or question my decisions. He was a quiet stoic man, but my kids still adored him and knew he adored them.

I take things a day at a time, trying to keep my schedule busy so I don't dwell on his passing. I grieve and learn to be strong.

We live on a busy main road and our master bedroom sits right on this road. The traffic sounds can often interrupt our sleep, which bothers me quite a bit. I researched ways to get around this problem. This is what I have found...White Noise Machines

Some ways that you can make white noise include using a small fan, buying a sound machine, using speakers or a music system, and using an old radio.

White noise or white sound is defined as a random signal that has a uniform frequency spectrum. It can be distinguished as an unvarying and steady droning sound. The concept of white noise is especially useful in masking or eliminating other unwanted noise or sounds, like the sound of traffic. White noise machines are used specifically for this purpose. You can actually make white noise if you want a little privacy or simply want to zone out of any disturbing noises in the environment. Parents who are taking care of babies also use white noise machines to keep the infant from getting disturbed while sleeping. Here are some tips you can follow to generate white noise at home or at the office.

Use a small fan

The fan is actually one of the more common white noise machines, but the secret in utilizing it as a producer of white noise lies in finding a strategic position for the fan. Place the fan in an area where sound tends to float through, like windows or doorways. Fans provide you with dual purpose: they mask unwanted noise and add ventilation to your home.

Buy a sound machine

There are sound machines available in electronics shops with different price ranges depending on the functionality and specifications. The cheaper model might have more simple features and can be used at home. A more complex system is made specifically for commercial use and for the office. Sound machines that are meant to be used at home usually are preset with sounds that resemble nature to ensure that the user will not be disrupted even when he or she sleeps. On the other hand, sound machines meant for the office vary in size. Some might be small and just enough to fit on one’s work desk, or it can also be so large that it requires installation on the ceiling.

Use speakers or a music system

A music component can also be an efficient white noise machine. Setting your music component and speakers to surround sound will ensure a more optimal function as a white noise machine. Finding a strategic location for your speakers will also effectively mask unwanted sounds in the environment.

Use an old radio

Old radios also work as good white noise machines. The radio must have a radio dial with a volume control that works. Analog radios are actually better at being white noise machines than digital models. Turn on the radio. The AM band is preferable. Turn down the volume dial to the lowest point; until all you can hear is a muffled fuzz. It is also important that you are not picking up signals from any particular station. Keep tuning the dial to find a steady white noise.

Today’s world is filled with noise pollution and distractions in the form of unwanted sounds. Despite being quite simple, the concept of white noise is actually very useful for resolving this problem.

Mental Roller Coaster

I havent posted recently do some problems in my head. My shrink put me on Geodon after diagnosing me with BPD. After some time on Geodon, it became evident that the medicine was not for me. The depression was gone, but the side effects caused a constant mania which made me act like a junkie looking for my next fix. Thankfully my husband came and talked with my shrink and explained my behavior. Doc quickly switched me to Seroquel XR and switched my Prozac to Zoloft. The Prozac switch made me a little nervous because I have been on it for 14 years with no problem. But I will listen to the doc, who thinks the mood-leveling meds are making the anti-depressant go into overdrive.

Since the change to Seroquel/Zoloft, the mania has ended. But unfortunately I am left without emotion, distant from the world. I find this very frustrating, because I hesitate changing meds again (what could possible go wrong next) and the change would require more doctor visits which are not covered by my insurance. And with my husband laid off and me working part time, the cost of the appointments is exorbitant.

I am trying to mentally force myself out of this distant funk so that I do not have to change meds again. Should I be satisfied with pretty good moods? Or should I keep searching for the perfect meds that embrace my personality but calm the mania? I keep wondering....

Considering that I am recently diagnosed as bipolar, there are many things that I did pre-medication for shock value. But I will not embarrass my parents with listing them here.

3 - What is the most recent thing someone has said/done to you that left you picking your jaw up off of the floor.

That would be when we were told that my father's brain tumor was back.

4 - Do you have a moment where you gained clarity about your life?

The moment I decided to file for divorce from my first husband. He had left me one month before and was stringing me along. I decided that I was worth more than that, and have not questioned my self worth since.

5 - What are you doing to achieve your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is to be a happy. After suffering for many years from depression and mania, I am finally being treated properly and have the future of happiness in my sights.

Last weekend my husband and I finally visited a Roller Derby competition in which our friends was a member. Our friend Kim (aka Psychopathic Lynn) is a member of the Murder Beach Militia and they were competing with the Right Coast Raiders. Little did we know that it was the finals for the Jersey Shore Roller Derby Competition. Everybody I talk to about Roller Derby remembers it how it was when we were small. Bloody noses, angry women, rolling violence. We kept putting off attending but chose to go last minute because why not? It was held in the Asbury Park Convention Center, which was chilly because it was November on the beach! But it was downright boiling inside. With a quick review of the rules, we found out this is a whole other type of derby. These girls compete on a flat surface and have to stay within the bounds of the track. All while traveling at dizzying speeds! And violence is punished (thats not saying that the girls don't sometimes play dirty) The fans were so excited, we got swept up in all the action. There was some anger at discrepencies in score keeping and chants for favorite teams. In the end, our friend's team won. I was screaming and jumping and yelling, you would think I attended every match! We are not sports fans but next season they are a definite addition to our calendar! Check one item off my bucket list!

Ok so this weekend my son, Matthew, took the SAT's. He is twelve. I am so proud that he did it, but also feel guilty for putting him through it. He was a wreck before it started, but then found out it wasnt so bad. He walked out of there very relieved, while the high schoolers around him were crushed at how hard it was. I cannot believe how smart this boy is. I love the fact that he is so proud of it. If he was to get a C on his report card he would be crushed. I am happy he has this drive, while still being a funny, sensitive child (on the verge of being a man!) Good going, Matt, shoot for the stars!!

Recently finished Cell by Stephen King. One afternoon everyone who is listening to a cell phone goes homicidal. Nutty. Then they become zombies. Those who are not partaking of the cell phenomenom (or just forgot their cell that day) must fight for their lives. The zombies try to get the non-phoners converted into zombies. Non-phoners have to figure out a way to get the humans back. Way creepy. Makes me think twice before I answer my calls. Especially at 3:03 pm.

I am posting the recipe for a wonderful appetizer we had on New Years Eve 2009. They are completely addictive!!
Onion-Bacon Crescent Bites
3 slices bacon, cut into pieces
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 package (3 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon fines chopped fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon caraway seed, crushed
1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls.
Heat oven to 375 degrees Farenheit. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray. In a 6" skillet, cook bacon over medium heat 3 minutes. Add onion; cook 3 to 5 minutes or until tender. Remove the heat. Drain if necessary.
In small bowl, stir cream cheese until smooth. Add bacon mixture, Cheddar cheese, parsley, paprika and caraway seed; mix well. Set aside.
Unroll dough; separate into 4 rectangles. Press perforations to seal. Spoon 1/4 of bacon mixture onto each rectangle; spread to within 1/2" from 1 long side. Roll up each rectangle, staring with topped long side and rolling to untopped side. Press edge to seal. With serrated knife, cut each roll into 8 slices. Place cut side down on cookie sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Product Review - Deni Ice Cream Maker

Do you remember when I said I was going to be reviewing a product for CSN Stores and Cookware.com www.cookware.comHere? Well, we received lightning fast in the mail a Deni buffalo blizzard ice cream maker! I have always wanted an ice cream maker and our house goes through a lot of ice cream! So being able to make our own will save us a lot of money!! All the photos were taken with my iPhone 3G because I couldn't stop long enough to go find our camera! So please forgive any fuzziness!

Here it is out of the package! The white machine was back ordered so I went for the stylish Platinum and it looks really expensive!

It even came with this cute handy candy crusher for adding candy directly to our ice cream while making!

We only had to freeze the center canister for 8 hours and then add the following simple ingredients:

5 Ingredients!
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup half half
2 cups heavy cream 
1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Then we just let the machine run for 1/2 hour and we had a pint of the most delicious,

creamiest vanilla ice cream I have ever tasted! It only made a low hum while churning away.

To make the ice cream more firm, we just had to put it in the freezer

for a couple of hours and it was scoop-ready!

It felt so sinful to be eating it last night and having to save some for the others in the family.

I can't wait to see what recipe we try next!

It also makes fruit smoothies, sherbet, frozen yogurt and frozen drinks

(like margaritas and daquaris!)

Sounds like a good reason to have a party!

Greatly missed. Known for his overflowing cactus gardens. His bedroom drawer bank account. His being the local handyman/delivery service for the local "lady" friends in the neighborhood. His macrame collection. Always the substitute "papa" since mine were both deceased. His adorable little house in Holiday City @ Berkeley. The pacemaker that kept on ticking. Hope you are rocking it in heaven with your brothers!

I have had some complaints on the lack of posts about my mother. I apologize for the missing posts, there is just too much to say.

This woman raised me and my brother alone half of every month until we were teenagers because my father was always at sea. She attended school functions, cooked bake sale cupcakes, and helped make Girl Scout apple pies. She worked part-time so that she was always there for us when we got home from school. She knows exactly what to cook when we are sick. When I was 20 I was seriously injured in an accident during a vacation in Florida, she dropped her life and flew down to stay with me for three months until I was able to return home. She stood by me through a painful divorce and gave me well earned step-parenting advice my second marriage.

My children worship her and respect her advice. They often will go to her instead of me, knowing she will always answer honestly and unbiased.

She has shown her devotion and loyalty to my father for over 40 years. We are talking through good times AND bad. Through sickness AND health. Through retirement...lol.

I only hope that I can be as strong and devoted as she has shown me how to be. Love you mom!

Quick Trip to NYC

On Saturday of last week we took a quick trip into New York City. We live in NJ and the trips to NYC shouldn't be so far apart. But alas, being so close, we hardly ever go. Our family had a celebration at a small italian restaurant in Manhattan, so a small bus was chartered for the NJ part of the family. Our children are getting older so we do not see our family quite so often, so the trip was full of family updates and reminiscing!

Once we went through the Holland Tunnel, all eyes were on the city. We all live in the suburbs, so city life is fascinating to us. The shops right on top of eachother, the street festivals, the varied public milling around....

The meal was quite enjoyable at a restaurant called Domenico's. The volume of the crowd became quite loud, as people from NJ/NY do!

In retrospect we wonder what we would have done differently that night. My dear under who organized his delightful affair did so while suffering from End Stage Lung Cancer. That was the last occasion that many of our family would see him alive. I brings great pains to my chest that I did not gush over to him with a dramatic farewell, but he would have scoffed me away as he does.
I am glad he was able to enjoy this last family feast with us and leave a beautiful memory in all of our hearts to remember him buy. We all loved you Uncle Bill. You were a great man.

My husband and I have been through some tough stuff lately. Had our highs and lows. Decided to stop trying to change each other and just accept ourselves for what we are, flaws and all. He has been an awesome support to me right now with several issues and I am thankful to have him. He is a great husband and step-dad to my two kids.
